PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Small groups with age-appropriate instruction.
VERUM Chess offers small-group instruction for beginners and developing players at three Calgary Public Library locations. Each group has a maximum of eight children.
Placement is based primarily on age. After observing a child, the coach may recommend another group when that placement would better support learning, participation or group dynamics.

A trial lesson is free. If a child joins after the month has begun, the first month is prorated according to the number of remaining lessons.
SKILLS & DEVELOPMENT
Learning and program format
- Board setup, coordinates and the movement and role of every piece
- Check, the three ways to respond to check, checkmate and stalemate
- Safe squares, exchanges, castling and sound opening play
- Chess tactics including forks, pins, x-rays, double attacks and mating patterns
- Pawn races, passed pawns, king activity and basic endgame play
- The checks–captures–threats thinking routine, planning and seeing ahead
- Tournament conduct, emotional self-management, honesty and respect
Each group meets once per week for a 60-minute lesson with no more than eight children. The curriculum combines chess stories, guided questions, links to everyday situations, theory, practice and age-appropriate encouragement.
Lessons progress from the board and piece movement through check, checkmate, tactics, opening play, pawn and king play, timed mating patterns and tournament-style activities.
RESOURCES
Materials
VERUM provides chessboards, pieces, clocks and other instructional materials required for each lesson. Children do not need to bring chess equipment unless the coach specifically requests it for a particular activity.
PARTICIPANT CARE
Parent presence, supervision and safety
A parent or authorized adult must bring the child to the lesson, remain inside the library for the entire lesson and pick the child up afterward. A child may leave the learning area, including to use the washroom, only with that adult.
Parents must provide accurate emergency and relevant health information and report changes promptly. A child showing signs of illness must stay home. In an injury or emergency, VERUM may provide basic first aid, contact the family or emergency contact, call emergency services when necessary and document the incident.
PARTICIPATION
Attendance, missed lessons and cancellations
Regular attendance and punctual arrival support the child’s progress and the group’s learning. Families should notify VERUM when a child will be absent or late.
For a missed lesson, a family may request a make-up at another VERUM Chess location. A make-up depends on space in an appropriate group and advance coordination; a missed lesson does not automatically create a refund or credit.
If VERUM or the library cancels unexpectedly, VERUM may offer a replacement lesson, future credit, a lesson at another location when space is available, or a full or partial refund for the affected lesson. Published holidays and planned library closures are not rescheduled, credited or refunded.
COMMUNITY STANDARDS
Conduct and communication
Participants and accompanying adults must treat the coach, other families, library staff and library users with respect, follow safety and library rules, handle materials carefully and support a calm learning environment.
Email is used for routine program and administrative notices, telephone for urgent matters, and text messages may be used for time-sensitive operational changes. Parents must keep contact, emergency, medical and participation information current.

- A place is confirmed only when VERUM sends a confirmation email.
- A parent or authorized adult must remain inside the library for the entire lesson.
- The monthly fee is due before the first lesson of each month.
- Withdrawal requires at least 30 days’ notice; no refund is automatic.
- A missed lesson does not automatically create a refund or credit.
- Participants and families must follow coach safety instructions and applicable library rules.

Who can join?
